If this is the first time having a friend or love one locked up, contact with the outside world can mean the world to them. Consider writing letters and postcards, or organizing a dinner with friends to write to your friend inside. Brief Prison Introduction
Visiting hours vary from facility to facility. Call the institution to confirm local guidelines and visiting hours for the day you plan to visit. If your writing a prisoner, call the institution to ask for specifics around the mail you send in, so that it isn’t returned to you or placed in their personal belongings, or worse, lost.

The Grand Valley Institution holds about 162 inmates in “cottage-like” facilities. It is run by the federal government’s Correctional Services of Canada.
Provincial Women’s Prison (For women with sentences for two years less a day)
There is only one provincial prison dedicated to housing women, the Vanier Centre for Women, on the same property as Maplehurst in Milton. It is designed for 124 women, mostly sentenced but also some remanded into custody pending trial or sentence. Vanier also functions as a detention centre for women without status.
